If you think fixing your garage door is difficult, think again. Believe it or not, this is a job that you can do yourself, even if you are not mechanically inclined. First, you must determine the source of the problem.

In addition to squeaky hinges and rollers, the tracks may be full of debris. Simply scrubbing the tracks with some liquid soap and then oiling them will help take care of this problem.

Finally, if the door drops after letting go, the extension springs may no longer be effective. To take care of this problem, simply replace the old springs with some new ones.

Reprogramming the opener, cleaning and oiling the hinges and rollers, and replacing worn springs, are among the most common fixes to everyday garage problems. Worn tracks and springs could very likely be the main cause of your garage door malfunction. In order for your garage door to open and close properly, the tracks must be fully functioning. Sturdy metal brackets are used to keep the tracks in place. If your door ceases to function, a simple inspection of the brackets to determine whether or not they are loose may be just the fix. Carefully tightening the bolts or screws is all you need to do if the brackets are loose. If you’ve checked the brackets and they’re secure, inspect the tracks to see if they are bent, dented, or misshapen somehow.

If the tracks happen to be the source of your problem, try reshaping them with a mallet. If reshaping the tracks is ineffective, your best bet is to purchase replacement tracks. If the problem happens to lie in the springs, some simple adjustments may be all that are required. However, if your garage door functions with a torsion spring, the repair may be quite complicated and your are better off hiring a professional in order to avoid serious injury from an incorrect repair.
